The Challenge was to transform a basic LED key attachment into a premium, scalable "Everyday-Carry" brand. By focusing on universal fitment, modular electronics, and high-end tactile materials, Centreline evolved a simple utility into a diversified, giftable product range. From initial research to global manufacturing, we balanced design intent with commercial scalability to create a market-leading experience that bridges the gap between a basic idea and a premium market offering.
DESIGNED FOR FUNCTION: Research is the foundation of any great design. For this project, we didn’t just want to build a “gadget”; we wanted to create a reliable tool that felt like a natural extension of a user’s daily essentials. We began by cataloguing the most common household key profiles to identify a common geometry. This ensured the attachment could be secured without obstructing the key’s primary function. By researching a broad range of profiles, we created a one-size-fits-all solution, allowing a universal fitment onto any key. The user doesn't have to worry about compatibility; it just works.
Design goes deeper than aesthetics. Balancing battery formats against LED efficiency, we selected a battery small enough for extreme portability but powerful enough to provide bright illumination in total darkness. Hidden inside the unit, a coin-cell powered flexi-rigid circuit board was designed to minimise the functional footprint and keep the attachment discreet and compact, focusing on miniaturisation without compromising function.
DESIGNED FOR BUSINESS: We didn't just design one product; we designed a system. Good design means creating a modular solution that can scale and adapt, allowing the client to capture different parts of the market with a single core idea. From the initial concept, Lumi-Key was designed with business opportunity in mind. The battery-powered electronic components were optimised as a compact module, allowing it to be used in a modular fashion in different products. This approach birthed two distinct offerings: the Lumi-Key Mini, a sleek single-key attachment, and the Lumi-Key Maxi, a compact multi-key organiser.
Every new product demands some form of mass-production investment. The design of a good modular system means that broadening a product range with a common design language demands less investment, allowing a new business to create a larger brand and shelf presence, reaching different users at different price points and diversifying new product risk.
DESIGNED FOR EXPERIENCE: Research showed the market was flooded with disposable, low-quality plastic lights. We identified an opportunity to create a version that felt high-quality and “giftable”. Using materials and finishes that feel superior to standard plastic (like brushed alloys and soft-touch elastomers) elevated a simple utility product into the premium “Everyday-Carry” lifestyle category to stand out from budget competitors.
The packaging design was used as a strategic tool to support a premium price point, using a clean, high-end aesthetic to differentiate from the blister-pack hardware store competition. The tactile embossed finish reinforced the value-added nature of the design before the user even touches the product. By focusing on the unboxing experience, we designed the flow to feel intentional, mimicking the experience of opening high-end tech or jewellery. A tear-away strip on the sleek matte black exterior opens to present the product and reveal a contrasting, brightly coloured interior; a true “light-in-the-dark” moment.
DESIGNED FOR USERS: User-Centred design is at the forefront of our approach. We mapped the "blind-fumbling" user journey to better understand the ergonomics of the dark. In the dark, the user shouldn't have to hunt for a button; it should be exactly where the thumb naturally lands. We utilised a high-gloss de-bossed logo against a matte finish elastomer to provide distinct tactile feedback, ensuring the button is found by touch rather than sight.
The product's design intentionally places the LED, key, and button for an intuitive, natural user experience. A simple squeeze-and-point action illuminates both the key and keyhole, featuring a satisfying tactile click. This ensures the device is immediately available when needed, making operation automatic and effortless.
DESIGNED FOR MANUFACTURE: At Centreline, we use our decades of experience in end-to-end manufacturing to bring our clients' visions to life. From initial concept to factory liaison, we balance design intent with the realities of mass production; navigating materials, processes, limitations, and opportunities.
For the Lumi-Key launch, our client wanted a standout "special edition." Working closely with our suppliers, we trialled an experimental two-colour blending injection process, achieving a unique aesthetic that generated significant buzz. Following this success, Lumi-Key is now expanding into the US and EU markets. We are currently managing follow-up production and updating the design to ensure compliance with evolving global regulations as the brand's journey continues.
