When Wild Earth Dice first reached out to us, the brief was to build one digital die that could replace a full polyhedral set in a way that feels magical, responsive, and trustworthy. Today, seeing their campaign soar past £300k with 1,660 backers and not even half way through the campaign is exciting to see where the product can go. Take a look at The One Dice on BackerKit
From our lens as a design agency, here’s how we helped shape that belief into something tangible.
Research and ideation
We began by looking at the core focus; how we could integrate the digital aspect to a die, whilst keeping similar properties to a polyhedral set. The initial exploration looked at technology, expected weights, sizing, and from that looking at 3D forms to suit. A key part of the ideation phase was looking at how to integrate light to create an immersive experience.
Prototyping
This was a deeply iterative phase, developing the form from initial ideation and testing ideas.
We produced dozens of 3D-printed mockups, systematically varying shape, corner radii, weight and distribution. The goal: a product that rolls and feels like a normal die, always landing screen side up, while still housing electronics and lighting.
Each prototype went through hundreds of test rolls to observe trajectories, edge behavior and stability.
We refined tactile feedback, looking at the feel in hand, the click or firmness as it settles ensuring we kept the the appeal of a classic die with a satisfying physical presence.
Every adjustment was a delicate balance between mechanical feasibility and magical illusion.
Design for manufacture
Taking data collected from the prototyping phase, we set to develop the design, working with electronics engineers and bringing the die to an engineered stage. Our industrial design experience here was key to the development; ensuring manufacturability, durability, precision and the best materials.
A die that tells a story
By teaming up with talented artists, we infused character animations into the die, transforming it from a simple game piece into a storytelling device. This immersive design, paired with a visually striking and tactilely satisfying product, has captured the attention of tabletop and role-playing game enthusiasts across the community.
Reflecting back, looking forward
From concept to campaign, our journey with The One Dice has been a testament to what thoughtful design and collaboration can achieve. What began as a bold idea; to craft a single digital die that could replace an entire polyhedral set, has evolved into a product that’s not only functional and beautiful, but deeply resonant with the gaming community.
With over £300,000 raised and 1,660+ backers supporting the vision (and the campaign still going strong), it’s clear that The One Dice has struck a chord. This success reflects a growing appetite for innovation at the gaming table, where technology enhances, rather than replaces, the tactile magic of play.
As designers, we’re proud to have helped shape this journey. And we’re even more excited to see what happens when these dice land in the hands of players, ready to roll, light up, and tell their own stories.
